The owner has been doing a lot of conservation, and the Park has agreed to lend him some giant tortoises if he creates a tortoise pen that the park approves of. This means removing a lot of invasive plant species. So, for the morning, we were handed shovels, pick axes, and machetes, and we went to work removing these invasive plant species. We focused on this one type that has these massive root balls and very long runner like roots, so it takes an extraordinary amount of physical work to remove the whole plant. It's an ornamental plant of some type - the flowers are quite colourful. We also spent the time working on cutting down some invasive vines to allow the native trees and plants to thrive.

There is an old fashioned sugar cane press with a long handle that grinds two gears and you feed the sugar cane in. In pairs, teams on either side of the long handle pushing it around in a circle so the gears would work.

We then went to see the waterfalls. San Cristobal is the only island that has fresh water year round and on a permanent basis. he farm has focused on conservation because this land could have been used for farms, which could have been a serious problem because they might not have conserved what was on the island.

He graciously invited the crew out to visit San Cristobal Island for a week of mistnetting, behaviour, and fun!
One of the most interesting things, as Darwin himself noted, is the among island variation about species. For example, we noticed that the lava lizards on San Cristobal seemed to have more patches and more saturation in their red patches.
And Angela and I gave a talk to Jaime's student's about the work we have been doing as well. Angela came last year with colleagues from the University of Utah studying the finches and mockingbirds and how an invasive parasite, Philornis downsi has been affecting them.
For example, when we mistnet at the Barranco near the research station, we often bring a tarp because the sun rises in the east and the platform where we work is completely exposed. This is bad for us, but especially bad for the birds that are awaiting processing as the heat is not good for them. We always keep the birds in the shade. So, what do we do when we accidentally forget the tarp for shade? We move to a place that has shade. In our case, it happened to be the bathroom.

As with all field set-ups, you work with what you have. We're luck that our site at El Garrapatero has areas where we can setup a shade tarp and have a little station where we can measure the birds.

Of course, when working with wild animals, it's unpredictable how busy you will be. Given that we are up at 4:30am and on the road at 5:00am, we often take opportunities to relax a bit if we're not too busy. In some cases, we might read.
And in other cases, we just outright sleep. For some odd reason, Jaime and Isabela, the marine iguana, were dreaming about Andrew Hendry's book....
Today, Jaime thought we could go to Media Luna because the storm petrals would be returning to their nest. Unfortunately, nobody bothered to check when the Storm Petral breeding season was. (hint: it's not the end of February). That being said, we spent the morning wandering Media Luna looking for the elusive Galápags Rail, a ground nesting bird that is very quick to run along the ground.
The microclimate in the highlands is extremely different from the semi-arid area of El Garrapatero where we do our regular mistnetting. We hiked from Media Luna up to Cerro Crocker, which is the highest point on Santa Cruz.
This year will be a mix of mistnetting to continue our long term data set on Darwin's Finches, as well as my continuing to study behavioural adaptations in Darwin's Finches. This year, we got started right away as Jaime had brought our equipment over from San Cristobal. Carlos, Angela, and I had arrived and were excited to stay in some new apartments that Jaime had kindly found for us. We headed to El Garrapatero for our first day of mistnetting this season.

For several years, we've always warned volunteers and assistants the perils of opuntia cactus. For the first time (at least it took five years), I managed to get my first major opuntia encounter. I tripped on a rock, mildly sprained my ankle, and managed to fall/sit on the only opuntia in a 10m radius. Thankfully, Angela (a) knew me from the previous year, (b) had experience pulling out opuntia spines, and (c) had some tweezers. So, our first day in the field, and Angela and I bonded over opuntia cactus needles being pulled out of my bum. #overlyhonestmethods #fieldworkfail.
The permanent population there is only 100 people, so the whole feeling of the town is much smaller and quieter than Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz. It was overcast, which made walking around much more pleasant!
And, of course, there was a wonderful assortment of Galápagos birds that we saw, including a finch that had very pale feathers. We called it an albino finch, but it didn't have the other characteristics of albinism, so we're not sure what's going on with it....
It is low and relatively flat, especially compared to the islands that have active volcanoes on them such as Isabela. We left in the late morning and spent the afternoon at Bahia Gardner. We slept on the boat and also worked in the early morning there.
Only two species of finches are found on Española, the warbler finch, the small tree finch, and the large cactus finch. The large cactus finch is only found on a few islands, so we were very fortunate to have the chance to see one, though I don't have a nice photo of one.
North Seymour is just north of Baltra, and is one of the islands that has successfully eradicated the black rat from the island, and this is very important as the iconic Blue Footed Boobie nests here.
Santa Fe is quite close to Santa Cruz, so the boat ride there was not too long. This was extremely exciting as we were getting to work on other islands for the first time this season!
Santa Fe is a pristine island with no invasive predators such as black rats or house cats. Thus, the animals on the island make for excellent photographs. For example, this juvenile Galapagos Hawk was enjoying the early morning sun and seemed to enjoy posing for us.
Land iguanas like to feed on the decadent pads of the opuntia cacti. If they get a hold of a pad, they wipe the pads on the ground to get rid of the spines and then feast on the succulent flesh.
We had an apartment that came with a full kitchen including an oven. I had convinced Marco to bring some yeast down with him when he came, so Sarah and I didn't let it go to waste. The delicious results included homemade bread
Our neighbors also procured some whole coconuts, so they cracked a few open to let us have the coconut water (yum!)
So, we're pretty lucky in that we get to eat and drink some pretty yummy things during our field seasons!
The island is most well known for harbouring the airport that serves Santa Cruz Island. It was regular flights to and from the mainland, and also hosts land iguanas, tribulus, and finches, of course!

Baltra also had an invasive house cat and black rat population that was successfully eradicated about 13 years ago.
This island is similar to North Seymour in that the terrain are large, red volcanic boulders, or areas consisting of vegetation and swathes of a fine, red dirt. The green vegetation, during the current dry spell, is fairly sparse, with patches of palos verde and acacia, as well as opuntia.
This year, I've been lucky to see them on different occasions!
Here are some doves we saw at El Garrapatero
While we remembered pi day on the 14th of March, we forgot about Saint Patrick's Day on the 17th. Well, nobody is Irish I think so it doesn't really matter, and St. Patty's Day isn't really celebrated down here. So, instead, Marco and I headed into town to collect behaviour data.

We started on foot but quickly realized that it would be much easier on bikes. While going around town collecting data, we did see some cats hanging out.

We also went to some places near our apartment. Unfortunately, people often dump garbage by the side of the road when they think they are on the outskirts of town. One person's trash is another's treasure however. Marco found an algebra book, a chemistry book, and a Galapagos tour book!

Well, Sarah did extractions all day, but she told Marco and I to take the day off, so we booked a day trip to North Seymour. This day trip tends to be one of the favourites of everyone who has ever done it, and Marco is only here for a limited time. We depart from the channel in between Baltra and Santa Cruz, which allows for a lovely view of both islands
With three of us there, we were able to keep the nets open most of the time, and we hit our desired sample size of 15 females for each of two species (small and medium ground finch). We were also able to capture a few more birds that we were able to process, which was great! Sarah has trained me in how to measure the finch beaks, which is great. I have been watching my colleagues measure for three seasons, so it was nice to get my hands on the calipers and contribute to the dataset.
On March 11th, we hit our target sample size today for the parking lot! We were there well before sunrise, and had our nets in place. The finches are molting, and thus, are not breeding. This means that they tend to flock more, especially at dawn, so we had hit our target by mid morning. Today I set up a time laps video for fun. We'll see how things turned out with it! The most interesting finch we got today was some sort of hybrid, the top beak looked like a fuliginosa, and the bottom looked more like a fortis. I don't think I'd seen anything like this before!

We discovered a lovely place in Puerto Ayora above the Proinsular grocer store. They have amazing desserts as well as scrumptious snacks like patacones with queso fresco. It is on the second floor and overlooks the port.
A yacht that had hit a rock or something had been on shore for repairs, and was heading out back to sea. Given how small and narrow the channels where marine craft can navigate, it's amazing this large yacht got out at all. The yacht managed to get to open sea by way of water taxis which are single outboard motor boats normally used to ferry passengers from a boat to port. Somehow, there was enough horsepower to get the yacht out!
He's been working with Team Pinzon's long term dataset, and had the opportunity to come down to see the source of all the data. We sampled at the parking lot where the boardwalk to El Garrapatero Beach starts. This area is still relatively close to the beach (it's a 10-15 minute walk to the beach from the parking lot).
We had some good numbers, and we're surprised to get more fortis than fulis. We also got two large morph fortis, both of which managed to bite either Sarah or myself, and those guys HURT (though not as much as a mag). We think we caught one mag, but the beak depth was just shy of the cutoff. It could have been because I measured the beak and I am still getting used to measuring beaks! Though a quieter morning than down at the beach, a productive one!
I had never sampled on the beach before, so this was a new experience for me. We set up two nets and there were lots of birds around, so we were busy for the whole morning. We stop when the sun is high overhead because it's just too hot for both humans and finches to do much.
The cages over the boats worked great! the birds poop, but don't jump around in their own poop. The only problem is the are molting so we are doing our best to time it so they poop, but don't do anything else.
Today we decided to scouting the different sites we were planning on sampling at around EG. We headed to the beach first before the tourists get there, and we found a nice place that was away from where the tourists would be, but where finches appeared to be abundant.

We also ran into a dead shark on the beach. It appeared freshly dead, but there were no visible injuries, and it had all of its fins. We don't know how it got there, but we're pretty sure scavengers would get to it quite quickly.

While we were walking, we ran into Team TickEaters: Sabrina, Ashley, and Angela. They mentioned that it had rained at EG, but nothing like what we had in town to days ago. That evening, Sarah and I prepped the supplies we would need for the first day of sampling. We found solid wire mesh and made little cages to go over the weigh boats. This prevents the birds from hopping around in their own poop once they have pooped. The idea is we want the poop, but we didn't want the finches to jump around in their own poop. If they did this, any bacteria on their feathers or from where they had been would contaminate the poop sample. We're in interested in the gut microbiome, so we want as clean a sample as possible.7

(but not enough to trigger breeding)Today, Sarah and I spent the day taking care of logistics so we could go the field. This involved a couple meetings with people to make sure all our permits and papers were in order. We got our hands on a bike, so Sarah and I both have bikes now, which makes getting around town much easier. As we were going around town to do our business, we noticed some rain clouds rolling in. I didn't think much of it because it can rain in the highlands without any rain making it to the coastal areas. However, we came out of a meeting and the distinct smell of a rain storm was in the air. The bike I had obtained didn't have air in the tires since it hadn't been used in a year, so I couldn't ride it home. So, Sarah and I walked home. The rain was warm and refreshing, and as we turned onto our street, we noticed three children playing in the street. Actually, they were literally swimming in the street! The rains were intense enough to cause temporary flooding in a valley in the street, and the boys splashed and played in the rain quite happily!
We had hoped this might be enough rain to trigger breeding in the finches at our field site. Unfortunately, though there was buckets of rain in Puerto Ayora, there was very little at our field site. However, this will not affect the main objective of our field season, so off to the field we go!!Kiyoko Gotandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11122194514694682036noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3044534802611438500.post-79305449682199927652016-02-29T14:50:00.000-08:002016-03-08T16:01:34.910-08:00Quito and MindoSarah and I arrived into Quito on the Friday and even though we got in quite late, we decided to grab a cerveza at the bar across the street. It was nice to catch up with Sarah and we were ready to enjoy our time in Quito. The Saturday we went to the artisnal market where we were able to find lovely alpaca blankets and scarves. I found a knock off Ecuador football (soccer) jersey as well as a Panama hat. Panama hats are handmade in Ecuador, and there is a reason they are called Panama hats. The hats were extremely popular throughout the world, so were shipped to Panama where they were then picked up by ships and distributed around the world. Panama because associated with the distribution of these hats, and that is why they are called Panama Hats. Granted, this is from Wikipedia!
Sunday was a relaxing workation type day, getting some stuff done, taking naps, those kinds of things. On Monday, we did a tour through Mindo. We had an excellent guide - Jose - who accommodated our desire to spend practically all our time looking for critters - mostly birds. The morning started with a beautiful lookout over Mindo.

We then headed to a butterfly sanctuary where they breed and rear 19 species of butterflies. It's a well done place, with an area for caterpillars, and area where you can see all the different chrysali of the different species. They rotate the chrysalis so that the ones closest to metamorphosis are in the same area so you can see butterflies emerging and drying out their wings before they take off into the sanctuary. There is a banana feeding station, and if you put some on your finger, you can take a selfie with a butterfly. Perhaps the most amusing was a butterfly decided a little girl's nose made the perfect perch place (no pictures, sorry).
After a delicious amuerso at a place recommended by Jose, we went to a lovely place where they have a balcony to sit on, and the surrounding area is full of hummingbird feeders. Sarah and I happily spent a couple of hours there, watching the birds. With so many birds, it's hard to pick some favourites, but Sarah's favourite was the violet eared hummingbird.

We also saw a Rufous Mot Mot. I couldn't identify it, and was saying it might be a Myna (wrong continent), and the owners daughter, who must have been five or so, with binoculars that were as big as she was, came up and declared "Mot Mot! Mot Mot!"
The first will be looking at how gut microbiomes can vary among finches in urban areas, near urban areas, and pristine areas. My colleague, Dr. Sarah Knutie and I, want to see how this gut microbiome variation might affect immune response to an invasive parasitic house fly Philornis downsi. You can see our video we made to crowd fund for this research through Instrumentl. Thank you to all our generous donors who made this field research possible!
The second project is my postodoctoral research that focuses on behavioural adaptation in Darwin's finches in relation to invasive predators such as house cats and black rats. My goal will be to quantify behavioural differences in finches in relation to the presence or absence of these predators, and to hopefully see if there is a genetic basis for this behavioural adaptation.
